AFTER SURGERY:

Bite on cotton for 45 minutes to allow the formation of a blood clot. The blood clot that forms immediately after surgery, allows for better healing. It is the loss of the first clot that can cause complications such as bleeding, pain and post-operative infections.

The goal is to avoid any action that could dislodge the blood clot. Here is a list of actions to be avoided for a period of 2 to 3 days after surgery :

  • avoid spitting
  • avoid rinsing the mouth
  • avoid smoking
  • avoid physical exercise, intense effort
  • avoid spicy food or too hot

If for any reason the clot is lost and bleeding resumes, bite on a moistened tea bag directly on the wound and keep a constant pressure for at least one hour. This will form a new blood clot. If bleeding persists, contact your dentist or a medical authority.

To reduce swelling, apply ice every 15 minutes on the cheeks in the hours following surgery. It is important to space the periods of application of ice 45 minutes otherwise, the effect is reversed. By application of ice, there is a decreased blood flow which results in a reduction of inflammation, thereby reducing swelling. However, if the ice is applied too long, inflammation is increased in response to the new trauma (cold).

If swelling persists after the first day, apply moist heat. In the days following surgery, the inflammatory reaction is complete, so there is more reason to apply ice. Rather, it should rather apply heat to increase blood circulation to accelerate tissue healing.

IMPORTANT:

Never apply heat on the day of surgery.

The days following the surgery: rinse with water and salt 48 hours after surgery. Repeat 4 to 5 times per day. A some swelling is normal and bruises (blue) may appear on the skin and disappear in 5 to 7 days.

Perhaps you have difficulty opening the mouth, this problem should subside after 4 to 5 days. To reduce discomfort, apply heat on the second day after surgery. If the problem persists beyond a week, contact your dentist.

If there are antibiotics to be taken: follow the dosage as prescribed and do not forget to finish the entire prescription even when there is more pain. Discontinuation of antibiotics can create resistant bacteria that make ineffective, the future use of these antibiotics.

For all other informations please as soon as possible with your dentist.
